Shadows on the Teche

Today I drove twenty miles to the town of New Iberia where I visited the Shadows on the Teche. The Shadows is an antebellum mansion that is kept preserved much the way it has been since it was built in the 1830s. Its grounds extend down to the Teche, a canal that winds through town. The Shadows was built by sugar planter David Weeks, who unfortunately did not live to see it finished. His wife raised their six children in the house, and four generations of the family eventually lived in it. When the last family member living in the house died in 1958, it was turned over to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which maintains it today. No photos were allowed inside, but I got these shots of the yards and formal gardens. Spring has sprung in these parts! The live oak trees alone made the visit worthwhile.
